In 2022, labor productivity in the private nonfarm sector declined in 37 states and the District of Columbia. Output increased in 43 states and the District in 2022, while hours worked increased in 48 states and the District. Idaho was the only state to have a rise in labor productivity of greater than 2.0 percent (4.0 percent).

The following states also had productivity increases of at least 1.0 percent in 2022: Minnesota (1.7 percent), Nebraska (1.6 percent), Connecticut (1.5 percent), and Kentucky and South Dakota (1.1 percent each).
In 2022, Alaska had the largest decline in productivity, at 7.1 percent, followed by Louisiana (6.1 percent), and Nevada (5.9 percent). In 2022, 21 states experienced a decrease of at least 2.0 percent in productivity.
Idaho also had the largest increase in output in 2022, at 5.4 percent. Minnesota and Nebraska were the only two states to experience a decrease in hours worked.
