It’s Self-Care Day. Massage or mani-pedi, anyone?

July 24, 2024

Self-care can be making time for a medical appointment, taking a walk, reading, socializing, or even just curling up for a nap. But the first thing that comes to mind for many may be relaxing with a massage or mani-pedi.

In May 2023, there were about 93,000 massage therapists in the United States adept at relieving our pain and stress. These therapists can often be found in settings such as spas and medical offices. Among the areas with the highest concentrations of massage therapists were Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina, Hawaii, with nearly 8 times the national concentration, and Napa, California, with about 5 times the national concentration. Across the nation, these workers earned an average of $62,560 per year.

Maybe a fresh coat of nail polish or even an intricate design is your idea of self-care. There were about 145,000 manicurists and pedicurists to care for us by cleaning, shaping, and beautifying our nails in May 2023. These workers earned an average of $36,480 per year. Two metropolitan areas had more than 3 times the national concentration of manicurists and pedicurists—Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Connecticut, and Vallejo-Fairfield, California.

Note: Dash indicates estimate not released.

From 2022 to 2032, employment in each of these occupations is projected to grow much faster than the 2.8 percent average for all occupations. Massage therapists are among the 30 fastest growing occupations, with projected growth of 18.3 percent over the decade. Manicurists and pedicurists employment is projected to grow 8.7 percent.

Employment concentrations for an occupation can be measured with location quotients. For example, an occupation that makes up 6 percent of metropolitan area employment and 2 percent of national employment would have a location quotient of 3 in that area (6 divided by 2). Location quotients greater than 1.0 mean an occupation's share of employment in an area is greater than its share of employment in the nation; quotients less than 1.0 indicate concentrations lower than the nation as a whole.

These data are from the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics and Employment Projections program. Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics data do not include the self-employed. See "massage therapists” and “manicurists and pedicurists” in the Occupational Outlook Handbook for more information about these occupations. To learn more about how location quotients are calculated, see "What is a Location Quotient?" (PDF), one of the Economics Made Easy classroom handouts.
