Job openings rates decreased in 9 states and increased in 1 state on the last business day of March 2024. The number of job openings decreased in 12 states, increased in 1 state, and was little changed in 37 states and the District of Columbia in March. The largest decreases in job openings occurred in California (−119,000), Pennsylvania (−50,000), and Indiana (−38,000). The increase occurred in New Jersey (+51,000).

Among the states with the highest job openings rates in March 2024 were Alaska (7.2 percent), South Carolina (6.7 percent) and Maryland (6.6 percent). States with lower job opening rates included California (3.9 percent), Hawaii (4.2 percent) and Ohio (4.3 percent).
Texas had 807,000 job openings, while California (734,000) and Florida (543,000) also had higher levels of job openings among the states.
