Job separations rate unchanged at 3.4 percent in May 2024

The total separations rate, the total number of separations during the entire month as a percentage of employment, remained unchanged at 3.4 percent in May 2024. The quits rate was 2.2 percent for the seventh month in a row. The layoffs and discharge rate remained unchanged at 1.0 percent. Other separations, with a 0.2 percent rate, accounted for the remaining separations.

A year earlier, in May 2023, the total separations rate was 3.8 percent, with a quits rate of 2.6 percent and a layoffs and discharge rate of 1.0 percent.

The number of total separations in May 2024 was 5.4 million, little changed from the previous month and down by 424,000 over the year. Quits, numbering 3.5 million in May, were down by 550,000 over the year. The number of layoffs and discharges changed little at 1.7 million and the number of other separations was little changed at 309,000 in May 2024.
