Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 17 states and was essentially unchanged in 33 states and the District of Columbia from January 2024 to January 2025.

The largest percentage increases in employment occurred in Alaska and Idaho (2.8 percent each), followed by South Carolina (2.4 percent). Employment in Utah increased 2.1 percent over the year. Job gains in these states ranged from 9,400 in Alaska to 56,700 in South Carolina.

The largest job gains occurred in Texas (187,700 or 1.3 percent), New York (166,500; 1.7 percent), and Florida (139,000; 1.4 percent).
