Real average weekly earnings up 0.7 percent from December 2023 to December 2024

Real average weekly earnings increased 0.7 percent, seasonally adjusted, from December 2023 to December 2024. This was a result of real average hourly earnings increasing 1.0 percent combined with a 0.3-percent decrease in the average workweek. Real earnings are earnings that have been adjusted for changes in consumer prices.

From December 2023 to December 2024, real average weekly earnings rose 2.9 percent in the information industry. This was down from a recent over-the-year high of 4.5 percent in October 2024. Four additional industries had increases of more than 1.0 percent over the year: professional and business services (2.0 percent), financial activities (1.7 percent), manufacturing (1.7 percent), and utilities (1.6 percent).

Real average weekly earnings declined 2.6 percent in mining and logging, the industry’s largest over-the-year decrease since July 2023 (−3.1 percent).

Weekly earnings were also down more than 1.0 percent in transportation and warehousing (−1.5 percent).
