Telework rate down for federal government workers in April 2025

Less than one in five (18.2 percent) federal government workers spent some time teleworking or working at home for pay in April 2025, down from 31.3 percent a year earlier. Among federal government workers, 8.5 percent teleworked for some of their work hours, while 9.7 percent teleworked for all of their hours. Both of these numbers were down over the year.

In April 2025, the telework rate was 20.8 percent for private wage and salary workers, excluding the self-employed, about the same as it was one year earlier (20.4 percent). The telework rate is the number of people who teleworked or worked at home for pay as a percentage of people who were working. Among private industry workers, 11.0 percent teleworked some of their hours, while 9.8 percent teleworked all their hours.

On average, federal government workers teleworked 4.8 hours of their work week, or 12.1 percent of their work hours, in April 2025. This was down from 8.2 hours, or 20.1 percent, a year earlier. Private wage and salary workers teleworked an average of 5.7 hours of their work week in April 2025, or 15.0 percent of their work hours.
