Unemployment rates were higher in April 2025 than a year earlier in 286 of the 387 metropolitan areas, lower in 72 areas, and unchanged in 29 areas. A total of 77 metropolitan areas had unemployment rates of less than 3.0 percent and 8 areas had rates of at least 8.0 percent.

A total of 245 metropolitan areas had unemployment rates below the U.S. rate of 3.9 percent, 128 areas had rates above it, and 14 areas had rates equal to that of the nation. Rapid City, South Dakota, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota-Minnesota, had the lowest unemployment rates, 1.8 percent each, in April 2025. Unemployment rates were below 2.4 percent in seven other areas: Bismarck, North Dakota; Bozeman, Montana; Burlington-South Burlington, Vermont; Decatur and Huntsville, Alabama; and Enid and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. El Centro, California, had the highest unemployment rate, 16.0 percent. Visalia and Merced, California; Eagle Pass, Texas; and Yuma, Arizona, had unemployment rates over 10.0 percent.

Kankakee and Rockford, Illinois, had the largest over-the-year unemployment rate decreases in April 2025 (−1.4 percentage points each). The largest over-the-year unemployment rate increase in April occurred in Eagle Pass, Texas (+2.6 percentage points).

Among the 56 metropolitan areas with a 2020 Census population of 1 million or more, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, had the lowest jobless rate in April, 2.3 percent. Fresno, California, had the highest rate, 8.3 percent.
