30 percent of workers age 25 and over had been with employer 10 or more years, January 2026

October 06, 2026

In January 2026, 30.1 percent of wage and salary workers age 25 and over had 10 or more years of tenure with their current employer, little changed from 30.2 percent in January 2024. Among wage and salary workers age 25 and over, men (31.1 percent) were more likely than women (29.0 percent) to have been with their current employer for a decade or more. The gap between men and women with 10 or more years of tenure has narrowed considerably compared with what it was a few decades ago. In 1996, 33.1 percent of men had been with their current employer for at least 10 years, compared with 27.6 percent of women.

A larger proportion of older workers than younger workers had 10 or more years of tenure. For example, among workers ages 60 to 64, about half had been employed for at least 10 years with their current employer in January 2026, compared with about 1 in 5 of those ages 35 to 39.

These data are from the Current Population Survey. To learn more, see “Employee Tenure in 2026.” Tenure data were collected in February in 1996, 1998, and 2000 and in January in all other years.
