Job loss rates exceeded job gains rates in 40 states and the District of Columbia in the second quarter of 2025. Alaska had both the highest job gains rate (9.9 percent) and the highest job loss rate (10.3 percent) over this period.

At the national level, gross job losses from contracting and closing private-sector establishments were 7.9 million, representing 6.0 percent of private-sector employment. Opening and expanding establishments gained 7.6 million jobs, or 5.7 percent of private-sector employment.
