QCEW Codes for Pre-2004 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (For SIC Coded Data)

QCEW data coded to the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Systems (1972, 1977, and 1987 versions) were tabulated based on various versions of Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) definitions that were released before 2003. Various versions of MSA definitions have been issued over the decades. There have been major revisions on approximate 10 year cycles, and (sometimes) minor revisions on annual cycles. The earliest posted tabulations of QCEW data by MSA data are for the 1975 period, but these were done based on the 1983 definitions, which received only minor revisions (even in the major revision cycle of 1994), until the release of Core Based Statistical Areas definitions in 2003. The table below shows the code and title relationships applicable to that period, and, specifically, are applicable to all QCEW SIC coded data, which are available for the 1975 to 2000 period. QCEW area code for MSAs differ from official MSA codes in that they have the character "M" preceding the official 4-digit MSA codes released by OMB. This allows the QCEW program to use a five-character field to hold the area codes, regardless of area type. Similarly, the QCEW program differs from OMB's official coding of Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Areas (CMSAs) by preceding their official two digit code with the characters "CMS". These are shown in the table below as well.

New Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) definitions and codes were released by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in the June 2003 to March 2004 period. These codes were part of a larger body of codes called Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs). The QCEW program has used the March 2004 versions and updated versions of these definitions and codes for all NAICS based QCEW data that have been tabulated for MSAs and CBSAs. This includes NAICS coded data for the 1990 to 2000 period that were reconstructed from earlier SIC coded data.
