An official website of the United States government
The primary source for the QCEW is administrative data from state unemployment insurance (UI) programs. The states receive a Quarterly Contributions Report (QCR) from private sector employers as well as state and local governments covered under the UI program. Federal government employers provide reports via the Report of Federal Employment and Wages (RFEW). For more information about QCEW collections and data sources, see the QCEW Handbook of Methods.
Reporting rates are generally very high because employers are required to file reports under the UI law for each state. As shown in the tables below, more than 90 percent of establishments at the national level typically report their data each quarter, accounting for upwards of 95 percent of employment and wages. The remaining 5 to 10 percent of data are imputed. Reporting rates vary by state.
Data that track changes in reporting rates at the national and state levels are available for download. This database goes back to the first quarter of 2020 and is updated after each QCEW news release:
The tables below detail the rates of QCEW reporting in recent years at the national and state levels across all ownerships and industries. These tables are updated quarterly with the publication of new QCEW data.
