Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages

Overview of QCEW Reporting Rates

The primary source for the QCEW is administrative data from state unemployment insurance (UI) programs. The states receive a Quarterly Contributions Report (QCR) from private sector employers as well as state and local governments covered under the UI program. Federal government employers provide reports via the Report of Federal Employment and Wages (RFEW). For more information about QCEW collections and data sources, see the QCEW Handbook of Methods.

Reporting rates are generally very high because employers are required to file reports under the UI law for each state. As shown in the tables below, more than 90 percent of establishments at the national level typically report their data each quarter, accounting for upwards of 95 percent of employment and wages. The remaining 5 to 10 percent of data are imputed. Reporting rates vary by state.
