The BLS Employee Benefits Survey shows that, in 1989, 96 percent of health plan enrollees had some coverage for substance abuse treatment. That percentage grew substantially since 1983, when 43 percent of health plan enrollees had drug abuse coverage and a little more than one-half of enrollees had coverage for some form of alcohol abuse care. This article examines trends in substance abuse coverage provided by employer medical care plans.
