Nevada continued to record the highest unemployment rate among the states in September, at 11.8 percent. Rhode Island (10.5 percent), California (10.2 percent), New Jersey (9.8 percent), and North Carolina (9.6 percent) posted the four next highest rates.
North Dakota again registered the lowest jobless rate, at 3.0 percent, followed by Nebraska (3.9 percent), South Dakota (4.4 percent), Iowa (5.2 percent), and Oklahoma (5.2 percent).
In total, 21 states reported jobless rates significantly lower than the U.S. figure of 7.8 percent, 14 states had measurably higher rates, and 15 states and the District of Columbia had rates that were not appreciably different from that of the nation as a whole.
