Unemployment rate drops at least 1.0 percentage point in 79 of 388 areas for year ending August 2017

From August 2016 to August 2017, unemployment rates were lower in 323 of the 388 metropolitan areas, higher in 55 areas, and unchanged in 10 areas. The national unemployment rate in August 2017 was 4.5 percent, not seasonally adjusted, down from 5.0 percent a year earlier.

Odessa, Texas, had the largest over-the-year unemployment rate decrease in August 2017 (-2.7 percentage points), followed by Farmington, New Mexico (-2.3 percentage points), and Casper, Wyoming, and El Centro, California (-2.2 percentage points each). A total of 79 areas had rate declines of at least 1.0 percentage point.

For the year ending August 2017, the largest unemployment rate increases occurred in Cleveland-Elyria, Ohio (+1.4 percentage points), and Toledo, Ohio (+1.2 points).
