An additional 32 areas had over-the-year rate declines of at least 1.0 percentage point. The largest over-the-year rate increase occurred in Kokomo, Indiana (+3.4 percentage points), followed by Yakima, Washington (+1.4 points), and Rockford, Illinois (+0.8 point).

Ames, Iowa, had the lowest unemployment rate in April 2019, at 1.3 percent. The next lowest rates were in Burlington-South Burlington, Vermont (1.5 percent), Iowa City, Iowa (1.5 percent), and Midland, Texas (1.7 percent). The highest rates were in El Centro, California (16.2 percent), and Yuma, Arizona (14.3 percent). A total of 204 areas had jobless rates in April 2019 that were below the U.S. rate of 3.3 percent, 167 areas had rates that were above it, and 18 areas had rates that were equal to that of the nation.
