Most metropolitan areas had employment losses for the year ended in October 2020

Out of the 389 metropolitan areas, 234 areas had over-the-year decreases in nonfarm employment and 155 areas were essentially unchanged. The 12-month employment diffusion index for metropolitan areas was 4.8 during the month.
Metropolitan area diffusion indexes measure employment changes in a set of areas. The measure summarizes how widespread employment increases or decreases are across all the areas in the set. An index greater than 50 means more areas had increasing employment over the period. An index below 50 means more areas had decreasing employment. At the extremes, an index of 0 means employment fell in all areas; an index of 100 means employment rose in all of them.

The 1-, 3-, and 6-month indexes were greater then 50, which means most metropolitan areas had employment increases over the shorter periods. The 1-month index was 73.7, the 3-month index was 86.7, and the 6-month index was 98.7.
