Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 96 metropolitan areas in the year ended October 2021

In October 2021, 96 metropolitan areas had over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll employment and 293 were essentially unchanged. The largest over-the-year percentage gains in employment occurred in Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina, Hawaii (+17.2 percent), Urban Honolulu, Hawaii (+10.5 percent), and Daphne-Fairhope-Foley, Alabama (+10.3 percent).

Over the year, nonfarm employment increased in 47 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of 1 million or more, while employment was essentially unchanged in 4 areas. The largest over-the-year percentage increases in employment in these large metropolitan areas occurred in Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, Nevada (+8.5 percent), and Austin-Round Rock, Texas, and Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida (+7.0 percent each).

The largest over-the-year employment increases occurred in Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California (+326,400), New York-Newark-Jersey City, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania (+302,600), and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+176,300).
