In October 2022, the number of job openings decreased in 17 states, increased in 2 states, and was little changed in 31 states and the District of Columbia. The number of job openings increased by 19,000, or 13.3 percent, in Louisiana over the month.

From October 2021 to October 2022, the number of job openings in Virginia increased by 47,000, or 16.6 percent. The next largest over-the-year percentage increases were Delaware (15.6 percent), the District of Columbia (12.2 percent), Arkansas (10.2 percent), and Louisiana (9.5 percent). The largest percentage decrease in job openings over this period occurred in Hawaii, at 38.7 percent, followed by Florida (24.2 percent), and South Dakota (22.2 percent).

The number of hires decreased in 9 states, increased in 3 states, and was little changed in 38 states and the District of Columbia in October 2022. The number of hires increased by 9,000, or 18.0 percent, in Kansas over the month.

The number of hires also increased in California (85,000, or 15.3 percent), and Ohio (28,000, or 14.4 percent) in October 2022. The largest percentage decrease in hires over the month occurred in Rhode Island, at 28.6 percent (−6,000 hires).
