In April 2024, the number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) was at 1.3 million, or 19.6 percent of all unemployed people. Those unemployed long term made up 19.4 percent of the total unemployed in April 2023, 23.0 percent in April 2022, and 42.9 percent in March 2021 (the recent peak).

The share unemployed for 15 to 26 weeks in April 2024 was 13.6 percent, the lowest since April 2023 (13.3 percent). The share unemployed for 15 to 26 weeks has not been below 13.0 percent since July 2022 (11.4 percent). The share unemployed for 5 to 14 weeks was 31.2 percent in April 2024, while the share unemployed for less than 5 weeks was 35.5 percent.
