There were 1.3 million long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) in January 2024, accounting for 20.8 percent of all unemployed people. These figures were little changed from the previous month.

Those unemployed less than 5 weeks made up 34.9 percent of the unemployed in January 2024. Among the unemployed, 30.1 percent were jobless from 5 to 14 weeks and 14.1 percent were out of work from 15 to 26 weeks.
Over the past 5 years, long-term unemployment reached a low of 4.2 percent of all unemployed people in April 2020, and a high of 42.9 percent in March 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
People are classified as unemployed if they do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the prior 4 weeks, and are currently available for work.
