There were 7.1 million unemployed people in June 2026 and, on the last business day, 7.4 million job openings. This yielded a ratio of 1.0 unemployed person per job opening. The ratio has been 1.0 or 1.1 since February 2025 (unemployment data were not collected in October 2025 due to the federal government shutdown).

In June, the number of job openings increased in transportation, warehousing, and utilities (+97,000) and in federal government (+39,000). Job openings decreased in wholesale trade (−74,000), nondurable goods manufacturing (−55,000), and mining and logging (−9,000).
