Section 22 covers changes in the value of household assets and liabilities. Assets include retirement accounts, bank accounts, stocks, securities, permanent life insurance cash value, and other financial assets such as trusts and annuities. Liabilities include store or major credit cards, student loans, and medical or personal loans, as well as finance charges, interest, and late fees paid to credit sources such as gasoline credit cards, financial institutions, medical practitioners, and certain types of loans. This section is only asked during the fifth interview.
The next few questions are about financial assets, credit, and loans. We know people aren’t used to discussing their debt and financial assets, but we use this information to get a picture of how spending relates to changes in debt and savings. Be assured that, like all other information you have provided, these answers will be kept strictly confidential.
