MSA Definitions for the
U.S. Consumer Expenditure Survey, 2014-2015
The 2014-2015 expenditure estimates for the Consumer Expenditure Survey come from two different sample designs. From 2005-2014 a sample design based on the 2000 census was used. Then starting in 2015 a new sample design based on the 2010 census was used. As a result, the data collected for MSAs in 2014-2015 were collected in slightly different areas in the two years. The two sets of definitions of the published MSAs are shown below.
Note: For publication purposes the New York metropolitan area was formed by combining the data from all three of its MSAs in the 2000 sample design (New York = A109 + A110 + A111); but in the 2010 sample design the New York metropolitan areas is just one MSA (S12A). Likewise, the Los Angeles metropolitan area was formed by combining the data from its two MSAs in both the 2000 and 2010 sample designs (Los Angeles = A419 + A420; and S49A + S49C). The rest of the MSAs are as shown.
