BLS hosted the 2021 Consumption Symposium on September 22 and 23. The event organizers thank the presenters and attendees for their valuable contributions. This symposium was designed to gather researchers to discuss possible approaches that can be used by the BLS to produce a consumer unit (CU) level consumption measure. While such a measure can begin with expenditure data from the CE, additional data are needed to produce a consumption measure that is more reflective of how CUs use resources (e.g., income, wealth, time, in-kind benefits) to meet their needs. Based on feedback during the symposium, BLS will be incorporating ideas and suggestions into its research, development, and evaluation of a consumption measure.
