Consumption Symposium: Broadening Our Understanding of Household Consumption and Measurement, September 22-23, 2021
The Call for Presenters for the Consumption Symposium: Broadening Our Understanding of Household Consumption and Measurement is now open.
To register, please complete and submit your registration to the symposium organizers at DPINR_Symposium@bls.gov. Registration is open until September 1, 2021. There are no fees to register for the event.
September 22-23, 2021: The free BLS sponsored Consumption Symposium will feature presentations from outside researchers and BLS staff. This symposium is designed to gather researchers to discuss possible approaches that can be used by the BLS to produce a consumer unit (CU) level consumption measure. While such a measure can begin with expenditure data from the CE, additional data are needed to produce a consumption measure that is more reflective of how CUs use resources (e.g., income, wealth, time, in-kind benefits) to meet their needs. At the completion of the symposium, attendees will be expected to better understand the challenges of measuring consumption at the CU level and will be more aware of approaches to overcome those challenges through the integration of data and imputation.
