Consumption Symposium: Broadening Our Understanding of Household Consumption and Measurement, September 22-23, 2021Nancy Folbre - University of Massachusetts Amherst - folbre@econs.umass.edu This presentation will outline a number of theoretical and empirical challenges to expanding measures of consumption to include the imputed value of unpaid household work, including utility vs. material living standards, what counts as consumption versus investment, individuals versus households (and age/gender categories within households), measurement and valuation of unpaid work, equivalence scales, and implications for measures of income inequality and poverty.
