The BLS has expanded the Consumer Expenditure Surveys (CE) LABSTAT database to now include 2010 through 2022 detailed level calendar year estimates that were previously only available by request. These detailed level estimates are the lowest level of aggregation available. Users now have access to an expanded library of expenditure items that increased from 154 to now 1,153, increasing the number of estimates available to nearly 8 million. The previous database only included items released in the published calendar year tables, items of higher-level aggregation like medical services. The updated database includes medical services along with underlying detailed items such as physician’s services, dental services, hospital room and services, and others. Annual means, standard errors, expenditure shares, aggregate expenditures and aggregate shares for these detailed estimates are available for seventeen different demographics, as well as all consumer units. This expanded database enables chart and timeseries development for these detailed item categories, either through the search tools online or via other software platforms using the underlying text files. Caution should be taken when analyzing these detailed expenditures. Users need to consider that some estimates are subject to high variance. For more information on variability see Section 5. Table considerations of the Tables Getting Started Guide. Users interested in working with these data are encouraged to peruse the search tools online and familiarize themselves with the underlying data using the CE LABSTAT Database Getting Started Guide.
