Consumer Expenditure Surveys 2022 Public Use Microdata 2022Q2–2023Q1

Original Release: September 8th, 2023

To users of the 2022 Consumer Expenditure Interview Survey Public Use Microdata:

Tax Estimation Data

The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) reported an error in the calculation of the New York State tax in their Taxsim v35 model which may have resulted in calculated tax liabilities for high income reporters to be either very low or non-existent. This resulted in a small increase for estimated tax liabilities by less than 1%. This error impacts the following variables from respondents located in New York State:

FMLI:

  • FINATXEM
  • FSTAXOWE
  • FINATXE1-FINATXE5
  • TOTXEST

MTBI:

  • COST where UCC = 950014

NTAXI:

  • All variables

Medicare Data

An issue was also identified in which mapping for Medicare payments was improperly assigned to each month in MTBI rather than the month in which the cost occurred. This impacts calendar year estimates and quarterly estimates calculated with the Public Use Microdata, however, the expenditures overall were unaffected. This impacted the following files and variables:

FMLI:

  • HLTHINCQ, HLTHINPQ
  • HEALTHPQ, HEALTHCQ

MTBI:

  • Records with UCC 580901

ITBI Finance Expenditure Data

An issue was identified were some costs which were edited during data production were inadvertently assigned both a cost for finance charges and a bracket range for finance charges. This led to both costs being added to ITBI and increasing the cost of some finance charges. This impacts the following files:

ITBI:

  • NEWIDs: 04815344, 04916324, 04918954, 04898354, 04916974, 04939934, 04956414, 04963994, 04932964, 04941904, 04938144, and 04941904

Data has been corrected for all issues, if you downloaded data prior to July 30th 2024, please download the updated files for the corrected data.
