PUMD notice — 2022 estimated tax data

Consumer Expenditure Surveys 2022 Public Use Microdata

Original Release: September 8th, 2023

To users of the 2022 Consumer Expenditure Interview Survey Public Use Microdata:

The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) reported an error in the calculation of the New York State tax in their Taxsim v35 model which resulted in calculated tax liabilities for high income reporters to be either very low or non-existent. This error impacts the following variables from 2022Q2–2023Q1 for respondents located in New York State:

FMLI:

  • FINATXEM
  • FSTAXOWE
  • FINATXE1-FINATXE5
  • TOTXEST

MTBI:

  • COST where UCC = 980020 or 950014

NTAXI:

  • All variables

BLS is currently working with NBER to address the issue. Once a fix is in place, the PUMD will be updated with new tax estimates for respondents in New York. A notice will be posted to the homepage and this webpage will be updated when new data are available.
