Real hourly and weekly earnings up 1.3 percent over the year ending April 2016

Real average hourly earnings for all private sector employees increased 1.3 percent over the 12 months from April 2015 to April 2016. This increase in real average hourly earnings combined with no change in the average workweek resulted in a 1.3-percent increase in real average weekly earnings over this period.

For private sector production and nonsupervisory employees, real average hourly earnings increased 1.5 percent over the 12 months ending April 2016. The increase in real average hourly earnings combined with no change in the average workweek resulted in a 1.6-percent increase in real average weekly earnings over this period.

Without adjusting for inflation, average hourly earnings for all employees increased from $24.91 in April 2015 to $25.53 in April 2016, while weekly earnings increased from $859.40 to $880.79. For production and nonsupervisory workers, hourly earnings increased from $20.93 to $21.45 over the past year, and weekly earnings increased from $705.34 to $722.87.

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) is used to adjust earnings for all employees for inflation, and the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) is used to adjust earnings for production and nonsupervisory employees.
