From September 2016 to September 2017, nonfarm payroll employment increased in 34 of the 38 metropolitan divisions and fell in 4. The largest over-the-year percentage increases occurred in Haverhill-Newburyport-Amesbury Town, Massachusetts-New Hampshire (2.8 percent), Dallas-Plano-Irving, Texas (2.7 percent), and Boston-Cambridge-Newton, Massachusetts, and Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (2.6 percent each). The largest over-the-year percentage decreases occurred in Gary, Indiana (−1.1 percent), and Elgin, Illinois (−0.7 percent).

San Rafael, California, experienced the largest increase in manufacturing employment (12.8 percent) among metropolitan divisions for the year ending September 2017. Over that period, Elgin, Illinois, recorded the largest decrease (−4.2 percent).
From September 2016 to September 2017, employment in professional and business services, education and health services, and leisure and hospitality increased for most metropolitan divisions. Employment within the information industry for Lynn-Saugus-Marblehead, Massachusetts, decreased 33.3 percent over that period.
