Over 1 million health care and social assistance job openings on last business day of November 2016

On the last business day of November 2016, there were 1,033,000 job openings in the health care and social assistance industry, yet there were only 566,000 hires in this industry over the month. Despite accounting for 21 percent of the 4,972,000 private industry job openings recorded at the end of the month, health care and social assistance accounted for just 12 percent of the 4,848,000 private industry hires during the month.

Two industries had more than 1 million hires during November 2016: professional and business services (1,060,000 hires) and leisure and hospitality (1,041,000 hires). Both of these hires numbers exceeded the number of job openings recorded in each industry at month's end.
