Real average hourly earnings for all private-sector employees increased 0.6 percent, seasonally adjusted, from August 2016 to August 2017. Over the same period, real average hourly earnings for production and nonsupervisory employees increased 0.3 percent. In the information industry, real average hourly earnings increased 2.2 percent for all employees and 0.1 percent for production and nonsupervisory employees.

Real average hourly earnings for production and nonsupervisory employees in other services increased 1.3 percent from August 2016 to August 2017, while real earnings for all employees increased 0.9 percent, on average.

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) from the Consumer Price Indexes program is used to adjust the "all employees" earnings estimates for inflation, while the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) is used to deflate the earnings estimates for production and nonsupervisory employees.
