Getting fit for the new year: a look at fitness centers by metro area

January 04, 2018

The new year is often a time for setting new fitness goals. Depending on where one lives, achieving these goals might be easier with help from employees at fitness and recreational sports centers. Here we’ve mapped metro areas by their fitness center employee location quotient in June 2017, the latest period for which data are available. Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Connecticut, had the highest location quotient, at 2.8 times the national average.

Wichita, Kansas, and Charlottesville, Virginia, also had higher-than-average concentrations of employment in fitness and recreational sports centers, with location quotients of 2.30 and 2.14. Lawton, Oklahoma (0.14), Kokomo, Indiana (0.12), and Manhattan, Kansas (0.12), had the lowest concentration of employees in fitness centers among metropolitan areas.

Employees in Victoria, Texas, made the highest average weekly wage, at $608, followed by employees in Sebastian-Vero Beach, Florida ($557), and Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Connecticut ($476).

Comparing total establishments, New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA, ranked first in the U.S. with 2,848 centers, followed by Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California (1,385), and Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI (1,133).

Location quotients are the ratio of an industry’s employment share in an area to its national share. For example, an industry with 6 percent of metropolitan area employment and 2 percent of national employment would have a location quotient in that area of 6/2 = 3. A location quotient greater than 1 means the industry has a higher share of area employment than the national average.

These data are from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program. You can get more industry employment data for the nation, states, counties, and metropolitan areas through the QCEW data viewer tool.
