The largest over-the-year percentage gains in employment occurred in Ocean City, New Jersey (+7.0 percent), Reno, Nevada (+5.5 percent), and Ogden-Clearfield, Utah (+4.6 percent). Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, and Punta Gorda, all in Florida, St. George, Utah; Gainesville, Georgia; Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Asheville, North Carolina all had employment increases of 4.0–4.3 percent over the year ended in August 2019.
Among large metropolitan areas, nonfarm employment rose in 32 of the 51 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of 1 million or more, while employment was essentially unchanged in 19 areas. The largest over-the-year percentage increases in employment in these large metropolitan areas occurred in Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida (+4.0 percent), Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas, and Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, Washington (+3.1 percent each), and Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas, and Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Arizona (+2.7 percent each).
In terms of the number of jobs, the largest over-the-year employment increases occurred in New York-Newark-Jersey City, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania (+134,200, an increase of 1.4 percent), Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+115,800), and Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas (+81,900).
Employment increased by over 50,000 in Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida; Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, Florida; Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Arizona; San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, California; Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, Washington; and Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California.
