Trends in casino employment from 2001 to 2018

January 13, 2020

From 2001 to 2018, employment in privately owned casino hotels remained fairly steady but fell 29 percent in privately owned casinos without hotels. In casinos without hotels that were owned by local government—mostly Native American tribes—employment increased 34 percent from 2001 to 2012. These casinos lost 20 percent of their employment from 2012 to 2018, however. In casino hotels owned by local government, employment rose nearly 600 percent from 2001 to 2018.

Local government owned casinos and casino hotels are primarily owned by tribal governments. Due to a change in Federal law, BLS began assigning Indian Tribal Councils and related establishments to local government ownership in January 2001. To learn more, visit Employment and Wages Annual Averages.
