In July, 142 metropolitan areas had over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll employment and 247 were essentially unchanged. The largest over-the-year percentage gains in employment occurred in Ocean City, New Jersey (+21.9 percent), Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina, Hawaii (+21.1 percent), and Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey (+14.1 percent). The largest percentage decreases in employment were in Lake Charles, Louisiana (−2.0%), Enid, Oklahoma and Cleveland, Tennessee (−0.8%).

The largest over-the-year employment increases occurred in New York-Newark-Jersey City, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania (+558,300), Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California (+359,300), and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+211,100), while the largest decreases were in Lake Charles, Louisiana (−2,000), Cleveland, Tennessee (−400), and Iowa City, Iowa (−300).
