From September 2020 to September 2021, nonfarm payroll employment increased significantly in 47 states and the District of Columbia and was essentially unchanged in 3 states.

The largest over-the-year percentage increases in employment occurred in Hawaii, where employment rose 12.9 percent, followed by Nevada (6.6 percent), and Texas (5.9 percent). Washington, Massachusetts, Utah, and California also had over-the-year employment increases of 5.0 percent or more.

In terms of the number of jobs, the largest increases occurred in California (795,800), Texas (711,500), and Florida (405,900), and New York (212,000).
