Employment up 5.9 percent in Charleston and Dallas metro areas, December 2021 to December 2022

From December 2021 to December 2022, nonfarm payroll employment increased in 81 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 308 areas. The largest over-the-year percentage gains in employment occurred in Charleston-North Charleston, South Carolina, and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (both +5.9 percent), followed by Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey (+5.8 percent). Five other metropolitan areas — Jacksonville, Florida; Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas; Raleigh, North Carolina; Portland-South Portland, Maine; and Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, Oregon-Washington — also had over-the-year employment increases of at least 5.0 percent.

In terms of the number of employed people, the largest over-the-year increases occurred in New York-Newark-Jersey City, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania (+344,400, or 3.6 percent), Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+234,700), and Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California (+215,700, or 3.5 percent). Also recording employment increases of 100,000 or more were Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas; Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, Illinois-Indiana-Wisconsin; Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, Georgia; Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, Florida; and Boston-Cambridge-Nashua, Massachusetts-New Hampshire.

Over the year ending December 2022, nonfarm employment increased in 40 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of at least 1 million, while employment was essentially unchanged in 11 areas. The largest over-the-year percentage increases in employment in these large metropolitan areas occurred in Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas; Jacksonville, Florida (+5.7 percent); and Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas (+5.6 percent).
