Median weekly earnings were $996 for women, $1,186 for men, in first quarter 2023

In the first quarter of 2023, women who worked full time in wage and salary jobs had median usual weekly earnings of $996, or 84.0 percent of men’s earnings ($1,186). The ratio of women's-to-men's earnings and the proportion of jobs held by women both varied by major occupational group.

Among the major occupational groups, the women’s-to-men’s earnings ratios were highest for sales and office occupations (84.8 percent) and service occupations (83.5 percent). In contrast, women’s earnings were 65.9 percent of men’s earnings in natural resource, construction, and maintenance occupations.

In the first quarter of 2023, women accounted for more than half of full-time wage and salary workers employed in three of the five major occupational groups: sales and office occupations (59.0 percent), service occupations (51.6 percent), and management, professional, and related occupations (51.3 percent). In the remaining two occupational groups, women made up 24.8 percent of those employed in production, transportation, and material moving occupations, and 4.4 percent of natural resources, construction, and maintenance workers.
