The largest over-the-year unemployment rate increase in October occurred in Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina, Hawaii (+3.4 percentage points). Twenty-seven other areas had rate increases of at least 1.0 percentage point. Grants Pass, Oregon, had the largest over-the-year decrease in October (−1.5 percentage points). Fifteen other areas had declines of at least 1.0 percentage point.

Of the 51 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of 1 million or more, 32 areas had over-the-year unemployment rate increases, 13 had decreases, and 6 had no change. The largest rate increase was in San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California (+1.3 percentage points). The largest jobless rate declines occurred in Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, Maryland, and Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, Oregon-Washington (−0.9 percentage point each).
