Unemployment rates lower in 222 metro areas over the year ended June 2023

Unemployment rates were lower in June 2023 than a year earlier in 222 of the 389 metropolitan areas, higher in 119 areas, and unchanged in 48 areas. The largest over-the-year unemployment rate decreases occurred in Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, Maryland, and California-Lexington Park, Maryland (−2.0 percentage points each). These two areas, along with Manchester, New Hampshire; Portsmouth, New Hampshire-Maine; and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, had the lowest unemployment rates at 1.7 percent each. El Centro, California, had the largest over-the-year rate increase in June (+3.1 percentage points) and the highest jobless rate, 16.9 percent.

Of the 51 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of 1 million or more, Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, Maryland, had the lowest jobless rate in June, 1.7 percent. Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, Nevada, had the highest rate, 6.0 percent.

There were 27 large areas that had over-the-year unemployment rate decreases, 18 had increases, and 6 had no change. The largest rate declines occurred in Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, Maryland (−2.0 percentage points) and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (−1.0 percentage point). San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California (+1.0 percentage point) recorded the largest jobless rate increase.
