Unemployment rates were lower in April 2023 than a year earlier in 252 of the 389 metropolitan areas, higher in 103 areas, and unchanged in 34 areas. The largest over-the-year unemployment rate decrease in April occurred in Yuma, Arizona (−2.0 percentage points). Twenty-seven other areas had rate declines of at least 1.0 percentage point. El Centro, California, had the largest over-the-year rate increase in April (+2.3 percentage points).

The next lowest rate was in Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, Maryland, 1.9 percent. Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, Nevada, had the highest rate, 5.5 percent. Thirty-one large areas had over-the-year unemployment rate decreases, 16 had increases, and 4 had no change. The largest rate declines occurred in Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, Michigan (−1.5 percentage points), and Cleveland-Elyria, Ohio (−1.4 points). The largest jobless rate increase was in Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, Minnesota-Wisconsin (+0.7 percentage point).
