Consumer prices up 2.4 percent from September 2023 to September 2024

From September 2023 to September 2024, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 2.4 percent, the smallest over-the-year increase since the 12 months ended February 2021. Over the year ended September 2024, prices for food increased 2.3 percent, prices for energy decreased 6.8 percent, and prices for all items less food and energy increased 3.3 percent.

Food at home prices rose 1.3 percent and food away from home prices rose 3.9 percent from September 2023 to September 2024.
Within energy, gasoline prices decreased 15.3 percent over the year and fuel oil prices decreased 22.4 percent. In contrast, electricity prices increased 3.7 percent and natural gas prices were up 2.0 percent.
Prices for shelter increased 4.9 percent, accounting for over 65 percent of the total 12-month increase in prices for all items less food and energy. Other items with notable price increases over the year ended September 2024 include motor vehicle insurance (16.3 percent), medical care (3.3 percent), personal care (2.5 percent), and apparel (1.8 percent).
