Job openings rates decreased in 4 states, increased in 1 state, and were little changed in 45 states and the District of Columbia on the last business day of July 2024. The largest decreases in job openings rates occurred in Minnesota (−1.3 percentage points) and in Massachusetts and New York (−0.9 percentage point each). The increase occurred in Oklahoma (+0.7 percentage point). Over the month, the national job openings rate changed little.

Among the states with the highest job openings rates in July 2024 were Alaska (6.4 percent), West Virginia (6.3 percent), Kentucky (6.2 percent), and Colorado (6.1 percent). States with lower job opening rates included California (3.3 percent), and New York, Nebraska, and Hawaii (each with rates of 3.9 percent).
The number of job openings decreased in 6 states, increased in 3 states, and was little changed in 41 states and the District of Columbia in July. The largest decreases in the job openings level occurred in New York (−91,000), Minnesota (−41,000), and Massachusetts (−37,000). The increases occurred in Virginia (+28,000) and in Louisiana and Oklahoma (+14,000 each). Nationally, the number of job openings changed little.
Texas and California each had 622,000 openings. Florida (513,000) and New York (405,000) also had higher levels of job openings among the states.
