In May 2023, San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California, and California-Lexington Park, Maryland, had the highest concentrations of STEM employment, at 3.43 times the U.S. average. An occupation's employment concentration in an area is measured using location quotients. A location quotient greater than 1 means that the occupation's share of employment in the area is greater than its share of employment in the nation as a whole.

The concentration of STEM employment was more than twice that of the nation in an additional three metropolitan areas: Boulder, Colorado (2.73); Huntsville, Alabama (2.65); and Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina (2.11).

Gadsden, Alabama, had the lowest concentration of STEM employment in May 2023, at 0.20 times the U.S. average. Areas with the lowest concentrations of STEM employment also included Ocean City, New Jersey (0.24 times the U.S. average).

STEM jobs had annual median wages of more than $150,000 in two metropolitan areas, both in California: San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara ($174,610), and San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward ($159,850).

These data are from the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program. This TED uses one of many possible definitions of STEM. To learn more, see the STEM dataset for May 2023. The survey covers wage and salary workers in nonfarm establishments and does not include the self-employed or owners, partners, and proprietors of unincorporated businesses. Also see the Periodic Table of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Occupations, part of the BLS K–12 Classroom Pages. Want to learn more about how location quotients are calculated? See "What is a Location Quotient?", one of the Economics Made Easy classroom handouts.
