Nationally, there were 5.4 million hires in February 2025. The hires rate, which is the number of hires during the entire month as a percent of employment, was 3.4 percent. Montana was among the states with the highest hires rates, at 4.9 percent, followed by Alaska at 4.7 percent, and South Carolina and Wyoming at 4.4 percent each. In February, hires rates increased in 3 states, decreased in 3 states, and were little changed in 44 states and the District of Columbia.

The District of Columbia had one of the lowest hires rates, at 2.2 percent, followed by Pennsylvania at 2.6 percent, and Maryland, Hawaii, Connecticut, and California at 2.9 percent each. Despite its relatively low hires rate, California was among the states with the most hires, at 528,000. The number of hires increased in 5 states, decreased in 3 states, and was little changed in 42 states and the District.
