Among other states with the highest job openings rates in 2024 were West Virginia (6.2 percent), and Kentucky, New Mexico, and South Carolina (each 5.8 percent). California, Washington, and Hawaii were among the states with the lowest job openings rates, ranging from 3.6 percent to 4.1 percent. The job openings rate for the nation as a whole averaged 4.7 percent in 2024.

During the past 5 years, annual average job openings rates of 3.6 percent, which were among the lowest, were recorded in Connecticut (2020) and California (2024). In 2020 the rate was 3.7 percent in New York and 3.8 percent in the District of Columbia and Texas.
