Nonfuel import prices rose 5.5 percent for year ending August 2026, largest increase since May 2022

Import prices rose 0.7 percent in August following consecutive declines of 0.3 percent in July and June. Over the year, prices for U.S. imports increased 7.0 percent from August 2025 to August 2026, the largest increase since prices rose 7.7 percent for the 12-month period ended August 2022.

Nonfuel import prices increased 5.5 percent from August 2025 to August 2026, the largest increase since prices rose 5.9 percent for the 12-month period ended May 2022. Higher prices for capital goods; industrial supplies and materials excluding fuels; consumer goods, excluding automotives; foods, feeds, and beverages; as well as automotive vehicles, parts, and engines drove the 12-month increase for the year ended in August.

Despite recent monthly declines, import fuels and lubricants prices increased 26.8 percent from August 2025 to August 2026. Within fuels and lubricants, import prices for petroleum and petroleum products increased 27.3 percent over the past 12 months while natural gas advanced 102.6 percent.
