Price trends in gasoline and other travel-related items, December 1997–June 2014

Have your travel plans been influenced by the prices of gasoline, airfare, lodging, and car rental? The prices of gasoline, hotel rooms, and airline tickets may have been important factors as consumers made travel plans this summer. Starting in 2004, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for gasoline, all types, began to rise more rapidly than other travel-related indexes. However, the index for gasoline, all types, decreased by 58 percent from July 2008 to December 2008 in the midst of the 2007–2009 recession. Since then, the index has surpassed prerecession levels.

The CPI for other lodging away from home, including hotels and motels, typically peaks in July. While the prices for car and truck rental are less volatile, the CPI for car and truck rental tends to rise during the summer months.

Airfare prices decreased during the last recession, but the CPI for airline far has increased 36 percent since June 2009, the last month of the recession.
